The Carolina Panthers are interested in hiring Sean Payton as their next head coach for the 2023 NFL season, according to Mike McCarthy of Front Office Sports.

The Panthers, according to McCarthy, may be prepared to wait a year before making a formal move for Payton. “We would not speak to, or consider, a coach who is under contract with another club,” was stated by a Panthers insider. This season, the 58-year-old will be employed by FOX Sports.

Payton announced his retirement from the New Orleans Saints last year. He did, however, sign an agreement with the team in 2019 and is now obligated to the Saints until 2024.

Sean Payton to return to coaching after 2022 season?

Anyone who employs him before then will be forced to forgo a considerable portion of their salary in order to keep him away from teaching.

It was previously rumored that the Miami Dolphins were interested in signing Payton over the summer. In addition, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has a longstanding friendship with Payton and could also lure the former coach.
