The 25-year-old forward signed a two-way agreement with the Cavaliers in 2019 after graduating from Kansas State without being selected in the draft. He then demonstrated that he belongs in the NBA.



Over the course of the previous two years, he has developed into a reliable player for Cleveland at both forward positions, and he has started a total of 47 games for the Cavaliers. The transaction requires a sign-and-trade for Sexton since he is a restricted free agent.



On the other hand, as per Shams Charania of The Athletic, his new contract with the Jazz is for $72 million over four years, all of which is guaranteed. Since Cleveland owes their lottery-protected 2023 first-round selection to Indiana, Utah will get those three choices in the following years instead: 2025, 2027, and 2029. The two sides have also agreed to a first-round draft pick trade for 2026 and 2028.

Meanwhile, Sexton was a restricted free agent after missing all of 2017 due to a knee injury. Although he had scored in the past for Cleveland, the growth of James Garland and the presence of other skilled forwards made him redundant.

According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Cavaliers have made an offer to keep Sexton, but he is unlikely to take it. This was discussed on the Wine &amp; Gold Talk Podcast. Fedor claims that Cleveland have made an offer worth around $40 million over the course of three seasons.



Although Sexton would be compensated more than the mid-level exemption under such an agreement, his salary would still be far below the average for point guards. At $13.3 million annually, he would be the 30th highest-paid point guard in the NBA, behind stars like Markelle Fultz and Tyus Jones.
