Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence sustained a left knee injury during their 37-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. While it’s described as a knee sprain and not considered significant, his availability for Thursday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints remains uncertain due to the short week.



Lawrence participated in practice on Tuesday but was limited. He expressed his optimism about playing this week, saying, “I’m going to do everything I can to be out there. I feel a lot better today than I would have thought, so I like how I’m progressing.”



The final decision on his status will be made on Thursday. This injury occurred when Lawrence was sacked late in the fourth quarter, and backup quarterback C.J. Beathard took over to run out the clock. Despite the short week, head coach Doug Pederson has labeled Lawrence as “day-to-day.”

Pederson referred to a similar situation last year when Lawrence was injured against the Detroit Lions but still managed to play the following week against the Tennessee Titans, throwing three touchdowns in a 14-point victory.



Throughout his professional career, Lawrence has not missed a game. This season, he has led the Jaguars to a 4-2 record, passing for 1,439 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. His average of 239.8 passing yards per game ranks 11th in the NFL.



The Jaguars are now preparing to face the formidable defense of the Saints. Lawrence’s progress in practice during the week will be closely monitored, and if he can’t play, Beathard is likely to start as quarterback.

While he got used to win almost every week in college, Lawrence suddenly found himself on a losing team. In an interview with Colin Cowherd on The Heard, Lawrence said he learned to appreciate more every win after last season.

“I think I learned a lot from last year,” Lawrence told Cowherd, via ProFootballTalk. Obviously, you get a different perspective than when you’re just winning like I had in the past. So I have a lot greater appreciation for winning, for one. And then just being able to overcome some of those challenges, face all of them, and then now going to a new year with a lot of confidence, good team around us, great staff — I’m really excited.”



In sports, it’s usually said that you learn from defeats. Last year was certainly a huge blow for Lawrence and the Jaguars, but there could be a silver lining in it if it helps the young quarterback to appreciate more every win. The team expects Doug Pederson to change its fortunes this year, hopefully getting the best out of Lawrence in the process.
