Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce hyperextended his knee during a recent practice, leaving his availability for the team’s upcoming season opener uncertain, according to head coach Andy Reid.



ESPN reported that while Kelce’s ACL is believed to be intact, he is dealing with knee inflammation. Kelce was officially listed as a limited participant in practice, raising concerns about his streak of not missing a game due to injury since his rookie year in 2013.



The defending champion Chiefs are set to kick off the NFL season against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. In the event Kelce cannot play, 24-year-old Noah Gray is expected to step in as the starting tight end. Gray had 28 catches for 299 yards and one touchdown in 17 games last season.

Even so, Allen says his relationship with the Chiefs star is great.

“I’ve spent a couple of times around Patrick, but every time I’m around him, he’s just a great dude,” Allen said in The Steam Room podcast, per Ed Easton Jr. of USA Today. “He’s a great personality. He’s fun to be around. And obviously, all the respect that I have from on the field, I think it’s a different vibe than what people think.



Allen acknowledges that things have to be different when they face each other, but that doesn’t change the fact that they get along off the field. “It’s the old mantra, ‘You gotta hate your enemy.’ But I would say that we have a really good relationship, especially for, you know, the type of games that we tend to play in. [The] AFC championship two years ago, and obviously, the divisional last year. But he is — he’s awesome. He really is. Love being around him.”

Teams are not used to take a quarterback in the first round of an NFL draft unless they really need someone at the position. The <a href="https:\/\/news.thesportsdrop.com/nfl/super-bowl-champions-list-of-all-time-winners-215-20220503-SPD-215.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chiefs</a>, however, have proven that sometimes it’s best to select one even if you are momentarily fine at the position.



When <a href="https:\/\/news.thesportsdrop.com/nfl/tom-brady-super-bowl-rings-how-many-nfl-championships-has-the-quarterback-won-93-20220502-SPD-93.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kansas City</a> selected Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft, Alex Smith was still at a great moment at the helm of the team. But he wasn’t getting any younger and the Chiefs anticipated that.



Mahomes would eventually take the reins and lead them to consecutive <a href="https:\/\/news.thesportsdrop.com/nfl/nfl-ring-value-how-much-does-a-super-bowl-ring-cost-188-20220502-SPD-188.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Super Bowls</a>, winning a long-awaited title in 2020 before losing to the Bucs in 2021. According to Andy Reid, Smith deserves a lot of credit for his successor’s breakthrough.

“I told Alex, ‘Man go out and have the greatest year you’ve ever had and to you don’t have to teach Pat. We’re here to do that as coaches,” Reid told Colin Cowherd, via the Kansas City Star. “You’re out there to go produce and win games and do the best you possibly can for your team.’ And so that’s the way we approached it with him. Now Alex by nature, though, was the greatest thing that ever happened to Patrick Mahomes.



“There are different ways to do this thing, whether you play the player right now or some behind a veteran player. Alex was perfect for that. Alex did let Patrick into his world without being forced on it or anything and he let Patrick in it. Patrick handled it the right way and didn’t step in the way of Alex as the Chiefs QB and what he needed to produce and had respect for him. So it worked out perfect. I didn’t have to say a whole lot other than, ‘You go play and go win games, let’s go win a championship. and do the best you possibly can do at the quarterback position.”



This is interesting, considering that <a href="https:\/\/news.thesportsdrop.com/nfl/nfl-news-ryan-tannehill-takes-subtle-shot-at-titans-front-office-for-aj-brown-trade-317-20220503-SPD-317.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ryan Tannehill</a> recently made a lot of enemies by claiming that it’s not his job to mentor Malik Willis. Even though Reid would understand it, he’s thankful that Smith thought otherwise.

Tyreek Hill, however, may have been the most notable WR to change teams this year. The <a href="https:\/\/news.thesportsdrop.com/nfl/super-bowl-champions-list-of-all-time-winners-215-20220503-SPD-215.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kansas City Chiefs</a> traded Cheetah to the Miami Dolphins, a deal that took many by surprise.



One of, if not the fastest player in the league, Hill formed a prolific duo with Patrick Mahomes during his stay in Kansas City. Chiefs GM Brett Veach, however, believes the team will overcome his absence.



<h2>Brett Veach optimistic about Chiefs’ 2022 season despite Hill’s departure</h2>



“I think that the cool thing about what we have here is when you have a coach like Andy Reid and an offensive coordinator like Eric Bieniemy and Pat Mahomes,” Veach said, per ProFootballTalk. “I think there’s many ways to score points and many ways to move the football. I think you’ve seen Coach [Reid] do it over the years with different types of skillsets and different types of quarterbacks. He’s had an advantage because no quarterback he’s ever had is quite as gifted as Pat. 



“We still love the talent on this team. We have guys that can run in Mecole Hardman and MVS. We’re going to add a rookie here in Skyy Moore. We have some size with Travis and with JuJu. I think on top of that, we also have a great offensive line. I think there’ll be many ways to score points and I think Coach will never be short of creativity. I think our game plan will be much like it was and has been every year. That’s just find ways to get these guys in positions to win. Now listen, with Tyreek it was a little easier because we’d just tell him to run. That’s the way of winning. With these guys we have here, they may not be as fast, but we have a ton of talent.”



Veach has all fair points. Hill’s departure is certainly a blow, but it’s not the end of the world. The Chiefs still have Travis Kelce and added new weapons in offense. But most importantly, they still have Mahomes under center.
